Gardening in Minutes Review: Metal Raised Beds & Garden Grid (Honest Take)
I've been square foot gardening for years, and two products genuinely changed how my raised beds work: the metal raised beds and the Garden Grid irrigation system from Gardening in Minutes. I bought both, assembled both, and grew in both. This review covers everything I learned.
If you're setting up a new raised bed or rethinking your watering setup, this is written for you.
The Metal Raised Beds
The first thing that surprised me about the Gardening in Minutes metal raised beds was the packaging. Everything shipped in a remarkably compact box — panels, corners, support rods, safety edging, and a bag of food-safe stainless steel hardware. Nothing felt cheap.
Build Quality
The beds are made from aluminum with magnesium — not galvanized steel like most competitors. That distinction matters for two reasons:
- No rust, ever. Galvanized steel eventually corrodes when it gets wet repeatedly. Aluminum does not.
- Food safe by default. You don't need a liner to keep your soil from touching the metal.
The ivory color is deliberate, not just aesthetic. Dark metal beds in full sun can heat up significantly, which stresses plant roots. The light color reflects heat and keeps soil temperatures more stable — a detail that shows thoughtful design.
Assembly
Assembly takes about 35 minutes the first time. Each panel connects to corner pieces using screws, washers, and nuts with the included hand tools — no trip to the hardware store required. The instructions include clear visuals, and the corner panels overlap the side panels to create a structurally rigid joint.
One note: the corner panels should overlap the *outside* of the side panels, not the inside. It's intuitive once you see it, but worth knowing before you start. Larger configurations include support rods that thread through the sides to prevent bowing — easy to install and essential for beds wider than 4 feet.
The safety edging snaps on along the top rim with a groove design that locks in place. I'd recommend wearing gloves during assembly since cut aluminum edges can be sharp before the edging is on.
Configurations
The signature product is the 17-1 bed — one kit that assembles into 17 different configurations. The classic 4×8 is included, and the kit also supports L-shapes, U-shapes, and other custom arrangements. If your yard has an odd corner or you want something other than a rectangle, this is a meaningful advantage over most beds on the market.

The Garden Grid Irrigation System
!Garden Grid irrigation system on a metal raised bed — pre-assembled and ready to connect
Square foot gardening has one frustration most people don't talk about: watering properly is actually hard. A typical drip system uses emitters spaced for rows, not squares. Hand watering takes time and creates uneven coverage. The Garden Grid solves both problems at once.
How It Works
The Garden Grid is a pre-assembled grid of water lines that sits directly on top of your raised bed soil. Water flows through the grid and drips evenly across the entire bed surface — every square foot gets covered. You connect one end to a standard garden hose and that's it.
What makes it genuinely clever is that it ships pre-assembled. There are no emitters to insert, no tools required for installation, and nothing to configure. I unboxed mine, dropped it into my 4×8 bed, attached the hose fitting, and it was working in about 5 minutes.
Why It Works So Well for Square Foot Gardens
Most irrigation systems are designed for row crops. The Garden Grid was designed specifically for square foot beds, and the difference shows:
- The grid lines double as your square foot markers — you can see exactly where each 1-foot section is
- Water coverage is even across the entire surface, not concentrated along drip lines
- There are no emitters to clog or reposition when you replant
I compared it to the drip irrigation setup I had been running for two seasons. The Garden Grid gave noticeably better coverage across the full bed, especially in the corners and along the edges where drip systems tend to undershoot.
Expanding to Multiple Beds
If you run more than one raised bed, Gardening in Minutes makes a Multi-Garden Grid Connection Manifold that lets you run several grids off the same garden hose. Setup involves connecting a short hose segment between each manifold port — no additional tools or fittings required. It's one of those features that sounds minor but saves real time when you're managing three or four beds.

Why These Two Products Work So Well Together
Gardening in Minutes designed the metal beds and the Garden Grids to be used together. The 17-1 bed configuration is built to perfectly match the dimensions of the 4×8 Garden Grid. There is a compatibility chart on their website showing which Garden Grid fits which bed configuration and how many cubic feet of soil each requires.
The result is a complete system: a durable bed with the right soil depth, watered by a grid that also keeps your square foot layout organized. For anyone starting a new garden or rebuilding an existing one, buying both together makes sense.

Who These Products Are For
The Gardening in Minutes beds and grids are premium products at premium prices. They are not the cheapest option — but they are made for gardeners who want to set something up once and not think about it again. The aluminum beds won't rot, rust, or need replacing. The Garden Grid reduces daily watering to a 30-second hose connection.
If you're building a square foot garden and want quality gear that works as a system, this is it. If you're just experimenting with a single season, a less expensive wooden bed might be a better starting point.
After several seasons of use, both products are still performing exactly as they did on day one.
